Through their eyes: How eye gaze technology is changing clients’ lives

A simple glance can change so much. Discover how Equity Trustees is helping clients communicate, connect and live with new confidence through eye-gaze technology.
A cutting-edge form of technology that was once the realm of science fiction is giving a voice to several Equity Trustees clients with severe communication difficulties, empowering them to interact with loved ones in ways that were never thought possible before.
Eye gaze technology, a ground-breaking technological system, allows people to communicate with others by controlling a computer with the micro-movements of their eyes. A small camera tracks where the person looks on the screen, and with the help of software, a person’s gaze gets translated into commands. The technology enables both the young and old who cannot speak to be able to type, speak, play games and search the Internet.
“We wouldn’t know how intelligent and talented our son was if it was not for this technology,” says Catherine*, the mother of 24-year-old Kris*, an Equity Trustees client who uses eye-gaze technology to communicate.
“Eye gaze technology has opened up my son’s world, enabling him to be more independent in so many different ways. For example, now, Kris can even watch his football on his own and control his own viewing.”
Equity Trustees supports clients to access funding to pay for the technology, via their NDIS plan or privately. Together with the client’s family, friends and care teams, Equity Trustees staff also work to ensure each client is able to make the most of eye gaze technology.
Katrina Harper, National Manager Health & Personal Injury at Equity Trustees, has been involved with several clients who have used eye gaze technology. The transformation that she’s witnessed, Katrina says, has been life-changing.
“We’ve been at visits where clients have used the technology to communicate with their families and with us as well, for the first time ever,” recalls Katrina. “It’s so exciting to see, and it’s nice to experience those moments where you know you’re helping to improve someone’s life. To be able to witness someone communicate, who previously couldn’t, has been inspirational.”
Tamara Hanley, Regional Manager (North) adds that the technology is helping clients to feel heard and seen. “Using eye gaze technology, I have witnessed my client being able to participate in meetings by answering a few simple questions about themselves, as opposed to having the conversation go on around them,” says Tamara. “The technology has also allowed the client’s carers and support network to get a better understanding of their unique personality. I’ve even seen clients tell jokes through the eye gaze technology, which is really lovely to see.”
Ann-Marie Veal, Equity Trustees Client Relationship Manager, has had similar experiences witnessing the technology change people’s lives. She recalls having a young client who had severe physical disabilities but a very sharp mind. “Eye gaze technology gave him a voice and the ability to express himself, rather than his thoughts being trapped within his body,” Ann-Marie says.
Through his device, the young man shared how he felt, participated in discussions, and revealed a sharp wit and sense of humour that had long been hidden. “He was just like any other young man with needs, views and desires. But now, thanks to eye gaze technology, he can express them.”
Catherine feels the same way about her son. She explains that the technology has restored Kris’ dignity and provided her whole family with a sense of joy.
“I encourage any parent of a child with severe communication difficulties to consider trying eye gaze technology,” says Catherine. “Its potential for communication outcomes has been endless.”
