B Corps globally offsetting more than 6.4 million tonnes of carbon in 2019

At the 2019 UN Conference of the Parties (COP25) more than 500 Certified B Corporations (B Corps) pledged to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030, 20 years ahead of the Paris Agreement targets. 

Today, more than 700 B Corps from across the globe have signed up. These commitments are translating into business action with B Corps globally offsetting more than 6.4 million tonnes of carbon in 2019. 

This display of corporate leadership is made possible by B Lab’s role as the pioneering for purpose organisation that helps companies to improve their impact on the environment, workers, customers and community. 

B Lab is the global non-profit that certifies B Corps. But its role extends beyond certification. It takes a leadership and advocacy role to promote responsible business practices including, in recent years, climate change.

B Corps are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. 

Household names such as The Body Shop, The Guardian and T2 are among more than 3300 B Corps spanning 150 industries and come from more than 70 countries. There are nearly 300 B Corps in Australia and New Zealand, which is the fastest growing region for B Corps in the world per capita.

In September 2019 more than 3000 Australian businesses pledged their support for the global student climate strikes as part of the Not Business As Usual campaign. This effort was led by Future Super (a B Corp), with B Lab coordinating a full-page media buy in Australia’s leading newspapers to encourage all employers to let their staff participate in the strikes.

B Lab works with businesses to prioritise and manage impact with the same rigour as profit with the aim of creating an economy that respects the ecological boundaries of the planet and is inclusive of all.

The community – and increasingly the law – now expects business to balance shareholder interests with those of the community and the environment.
