Viertel Foundation Logo

The Sylvia and Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation was established by Charles Viertel to benefit organisations or institutions involved in medical research into diseases along with the alleviation of hardship of the aged and the sick.

In addition, Mr Viertel named three Queensland organisations in his Will:

  • The Salvation Army (Queensland) Property Trust
  • Cancer Council Queensland (formerly Queensland Cancer Fund)
  • Queensland Eye Institute Foundation (formerly known as Prevent Blindness Foundation).

The Foundation was established with an initial bequest of approximately $60 million. Today the Foundation is worth more than $150 million, making it one of the largest charitable foundations in Australia.

Due to a number of current large multi-year commitments, the Foundation is not currently seeking new applications except for its Medical Awards Program.

Applications open: Annually on the first day of February
